St Bridget's Parish Church, West Kirby, Wirral - Photos of an English Country Graveyard.
An Ancient Viking Church!
Not too far from the banks of the River Dee, stands the ancient parish church of St Bridget's, which can date its existence back to Viking settlers. The Hogback Stone, displayed inside the church, offers evidence of the Viking influence on an early Xtian burial.
The vestry doorway and sections of the north wall of the Lady Chapel allegedly date from the 14th Century, while the tower dates mainly from the 16th Century. Much of the interior was restored during the 18th Century.
However, this page is dedicated to photographs of St Bridget's rather wonderful graveyard. This, too, shows clear signs of advancing age, with its tumbled and wildly-leaning stones which display a charming variety of shapes, styles and symbolism.
The rear of this peaceful graveyard is rampant with ivy and, in spring, primroses. Nature has been allowed to take over to provide a sanctuary for wildlife - such as the many birds which sing in the mature trees arching over this delightfully secluded place.
I hope you enjoy my photography. All of these shots were taken on 16th April, 2011.
Visiting West Kirby
St Bridget's Church stands opposite Ashton Park, where there are free tennis courts and football pitches, a rose garden, the Secret Garden and bowling greens. The pond is home to a large number of ducks and geese. A small tea shop is run by the Friends of Ashton Park, who also provide a lively events program throughout the year.
West Kirby Marina is used for a variety of water sports, mainly windsurfing and yachting. Flying kites on the adjacent sandy beach is also a familiar sight.
Hilbre Island is a nature sanctuary reached by foot when the tide is out. Check tide times carefully before venturing out there, and use the designated safe route. This information can be found on the large notice board by the slipway on West Kirby promenade.
West Kirby itself offers a good selection of quality dining plus options for smaller budgets. Family picnics on the beach are always popular. Browse antique shops or treat yourself to the latest fashions from the small town, which can be surprisingly busy during the summer season.
