What I Dislike about Hubpages

Write for Hubpages!

Writing for Hubpages can fulfill several functions. Here you can:

  • Create a writing portfolio to attract clients;
  • Earn revenue through affiliates;
  • Network with fellow writers;
  • Have fun!

Hubpages works like a magazine, with each page - called a 'Hub' - being like an article in that magazine. Each writer is free to choose which subjects they wish to write about, so long as this does not break the usual legal guidelines about acceptable internet content.

If earning money is of prime concern, then a newbie would be advised to take the time to read Hubpages own detailed 'How To' articles which explain search engine optimisation (SEO), how Adwords works, how to set out a Hubpage to allow optimal advert positioning, and how to set-up affiliations with Amazon and Hubpages own revenue program. There is usually a sharp learning curve for people who are new to all this, but if taken one issue at a time it's not too difficult.

.

Pitfalls on Hubpages!

Traffic generated from within Hubpages itself earns a writer nothing. Therefore it is necessary for each writer to promote their own Hubs via a network of backlinks from social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter, or from their blog.

Search engines typically consider "content farms" like Hubpages to be low in priority, and so can't be relied upon to do the work for you despite the use of carefully chosen keywords. Only the top 25% of traffic-attracting Hubs tend to get any real attention from search engines.

Layout of each Hubpage is important, as this effects the placement of adverts - and it is this which will effect potential revenue. Make things visual, but don't let your visuals get in the way of adverts. The first block on a page should be text but keep it short enough to hold peoples' interest while long enough to enable Google adverts to appear there too. Take a look at the top Hubs to get a clear idea of how to do this.

Break up text into short, digestible sections. Use headlines just like a newspaper might. This will aid SEO and make your page easier to read. There's a zillion other webpages just one click away, remember. Keep hold of the interest of your audience with tight, lively, well-written prose and relevant illustrations (which you own the Copyright for or have the right to use - plundering other people's work is not only unacceptable behaviour, it's also illegal).

.

What I Dislike about Hubpages

The forum was probably set-up with the intention of creating a sense of community for those who write Hubs. There are some worthwhile, practical sections which offer useful information about all aspects of writing successful Hubs.

Unfortunately, the forums have become a swamp of religious argument. I have no interest in who is right or wrong; ultimately, everyone has opinions. When opinions are shared and explored in a courteous, respectful manner the results can be interesting. Dogmatic squabbles, however, merely lower the tone of the whole site.

Good insight, I am still trying to make money on hubpages. It seems difficult to acquire, but I like writing and it keeps my skills up and ready to go. I marked you up.

It seems the lack of income made on here is one of the chief complaints. However, the one thing I do enjoy is the community interaction... that is far more satisfying then the cheeseburger I would have liked to buy :)

Thank you for dropping by, Nan and Barbergirl.

Revenue seems to be a frequently-raised topic in the forums. A few claim to make a living here - and only they would know how honest that claim is - but the majority seem to use Hubpages as a supplement only.

Informative article Adele. One shouldn't bring up politics or religion in a bar and sometimes it looks that way for HP,FB, etc. Its interesting to get traffic from 10 different domains, some are these mail.coms, those are intriguing, any thoughts on them? Thank you AdeleCosgroveBray. And your the thinking woman in the woods( Your Avatar & a compliment.)

Thanks for the information, most helpful, although generating an income was never a priority of me coming here, probably just as well since I have never made a bean.

My own fault entirely, I started to wade my way through all the 'How To' and got lost and bored long before I reached the end besides at the time I thought playing the game their way was going to turn my writing away from my chosen path.

I write on here mainly for fun and I only write about things that interest me or I can use to entertain those who find my wandering rants of amusement.

Seriously I hoped that coming here would raise the profile of Merlin Fraser the novelist of Murder Mysteries and I suppose in some small way this has been achieved.

Like you I find the takeover of the Forum by the religious and their opponents somewhat tiresome, I enjoy a good argument or discussion as much as anyone but when you discover you are debating with people who should be wearing hats with propellers attached it’s time just to move away quietly.

As someone not driven by making money around here I didn’t understand what happened recently when Google started to move the goal posts around. All I saw was the efficiency of their Search Engine go from useful to useless overnight and a lot of good people and good writers bailed out of HubPages as if had become the Titanic... Maybe it has and this rat is too dumb to realise it yet.

Thanks for dropping by this page, Alastar, Merlin and Dallas; and for the ocmpliments, too.

It seems some of the stalwarts of Hubpages have found their earning are now higher elsewhere, due to Google's changes, and so they've removed their best-paying Hubs to these other locations. I've recently adopted Hubpages own advert revenue program and this seems slightly better than Adsense was anyway.

Alastar, I've no idea how traffic comes here from these obscure-sounding sources. I've puzzled over that too.

I agree with the better revenue with hubpages own advert program now - I am still with google adsense as well but never seem to make anything out of it all. I think with google adsense you need a hot blog or something or at least a lot of technical know how to make sure it works for you. I can't seem to get any traffic to my blogger account but that's another story. As you say I think you have to link everything to facebook and twitter, keeping building your reputation. You can also put links to your hubs as signature links on various forums - it all takes time and its taken me well over a year to make $20. Cool!! It's a good job I only write for fun, I guess. Voted up anyway, thanks for sharing.

I don't know. I've had some pretty decent success on Hubpages. I usually make about $150 a month. I call that a success. The thing with hubpages is that you have to put a lot of work into it. You should be generating at least 150 hubs a year, if not more in order to get the traffic needed to make some $$$. If you talk to some of the folks who have been on hubpages for three, four, five years, they'll tell you that it takes some time and effort but after awhile and after hundreds of hubs generated, you'll see yourself making $500 and up. Keep writing, you'll get there..and I know I will too.

You're welcome, Leni - I've seen many Hubpages writers say something similar, regards earnings from here.

Kitty, if you're earning $150 a month with your 384 Hubs (as of today), you will have to write a lot more yet to reach the $500 a month you mention! I wish you well with it.
